My brother was killed in a car accident sometime ago. I know that when he died his father got some settlement money along with family on his father’s side as well. My mother got none. She did not have custody of him, but he wasn’t living with his father at the time of his death either. I am in contact with his father today, but when ever I am around him I feel funny. I don’t care about the money, I am just curious because not long after my brother died, my mom died, and my step dad and his wife out of no where were trying to push me to get a lawyer for my mom’s death, and they wanted to be part of it. I told them I didn’t want to do that, and they backed off. I know that they were trying to some how get money out of my mom’s death and ever since I have felt funny around them. I am asking about my brother, because I want to know if they did something sneaky.

Your father got the settlement money, because he pursued the legal avenues.

Any next of kin could have done this.

Doesnt matter where our brother resided his guardien which at the time was your father would have gotten the money. She could have gone to court for some of the funds would have been one heck of a battle though. As for your mom what was her cause of death? Are you thinking that someone killed them both? Or perhaps maybe your stepfather thought maybe your dad would get money (life insurance)

Whoever had custody when he was a minor would have been his next of kin I guess. Unless he was married. Your mom could have probably sued for half the money if she had thought about it.

anyway. It is just oney so I would forget it.
