I have received conflicting stories. I live with my parents and was their vehicle. I do not have auto insurance for myself or a vehicle. I got in an accident and now the insurance company is saying they will not cover it because I am listed as a driver on my father’s policy. I was told by several different people including a lawyer that I am covered as long as I am living in the house and do not have auto insurance myself? Can anyone help?
I am not a named issurer on my dad’s policy.
Ok so I have a typo on my question. I am NOT on an auto policy. But it does seem to make a difference because he did not list me on his policy.

Nobody here can help. All insurance companies will require that all licensed drivers in a household, who could have regular access to a vehicle, be listed on the policy and this is allowable by insurance regulations. This is because many people will not list their children on the policy because they don’t want to pay the extra premium, only to find out the hard way that it’ll probably cost much more when the kid gets in a wreck.

If you did not live with your parents, did not have regular access to a vehicle, and was driving with the policy holders permission, most insurance plans will cover you.

huh? if you are a named insured on Dad’s policy you should be covered.

        No – quite the opposite.

You MUST be listed as a driver on any policy in your household, or for a car for which you have regular access, in order to be covered.

Lawyer is giving you insurance advice without a license.

You live with parents, you’re listed as a driver on your father’s policy, and you’re NOT listed as a driver on your parents policy. You’re giving conflicting information here.

But if your parents are divorced, and you go back and forth between the two households, you must be listed on BOTH policies, to be covered.

And if you don’t have a policy in your name, and you’re driving someone ELSE’S car, then your father’s policy doesn’t carry over onto any car you drive. It doesn’t work that way.

SO. If you live in the household, and were NOT listed as a driver for a household car, you are not COVERED for that car.

Additionally, maybe you’re not listed because someone wanted to save money and specifically EXCLUDE you from coverage. In which case, you’re specifically NOT COVERED.

Print this out and show it to the lawyer. Lawyer is wrong. Friends are wrong. Insurance company has denied you "because you’re listed as a driver". I bet you’re leaving out the word "excluded".
