I really need your help with my situation that I am in. I just graduated from top-30 undergraduate school in May of 2010 and I really want to go to law school, but I have almost 0,000 in debt (yes, two-hundred thousand) and I don’t know what to do.

I’m about to get paid a settlement of ,000 (my tax-free, in-pocket amount after lawyer fees) for a motor vehicle accident that happened three years ago. I want to make this money not only work for me, but somehow be the ticket that allows me to somehow finance law school. With interests rates incredibly low right now, there seems to be few options for me to have this money grow.

I’m not concerned about retirement right now, though I intend to open a Roth IRA once I get the money. I’m most concerned about financing a likely ,000 a year law school tuition which would last probably four years. My loans are pretty problematic in that they are making it impossible for me to apply for any more loans, which is the real problem, I suppose.

How can I invest my money or use my money to help me achieve my goal of attending law school in a year or so? Is it even feasible? Thank you so much for helping.

I was in a minor car accident 3 yrs ago that was my fault. The police were called and a report was filed. At the time the report was filed no one claimed they were hurt, there was only minor damage to our vehicles. My insurance company paid to get his vehicle fixed. Now I’m being sued for emotional damages and loss of wages. Shouldn’t my insurance company handle this? I don’t have alot of money and am just barely scraping by so I can’t afford to pay them and can’t afford a lawyer. What do I do?

I was in a car accident in 05. It’s been five years now. Just yesterday I accepted a ,000 dollar settlement. My medical bills are several times that amount. There is no way I can pay them off. After five years of court date after court date.. depositions.. paper filing and two lawyers. I’m sick of it. And even though I will have to live with my injuries for the rest of my life.. I’m sick of fighting and want to put this behind me. So I accepted. My lawyers told me in the beginning to expect 0,000 or more due to my injuries and the nature of the accident. But the case got more and more twisted as time went on and now the insurance company just wants to take me to court.. where I could walk away with nothing.

This is my question. . I kind of asked my lawyer this. He said that the only bill that I HAD to pay from the settlement was to a hospital due to a lien? Then I would be down near ,000.

Anyways. I’m twenty-one years old. And don’t see how I am ever going to get these bills paid. My question is:

Can I spend the money and then file for bankruptcy? Or would that make me ineligible?

I want to use the money for schooling and to fix up my parents house. I don’t think it’s wrong of me to do such a thing. I have suffered for five years now with major back injuries and severe PTSD. I deserve to use that money how I please.. right?

Let me edit something. Before I ever looked into a lawyer the insurance company offered me ,000 dollars. I then began to look for a lawyer. When I found one and retained him. It was in the contract that his cut would not leave me with anything less than ,000 dollars. So he is actually only going to get ,000 dollars from the settlement. The lein from one of the hospitals is ,000 dollars. That leaves me with a check for ,000 dollars. My question is.. if I spend the money can I file for bankruptcy? I haven’t signed the papers yet. The problem with this whole case was that my lawyer hasn’t been able to prove that the farmer was negligent. His cows got out of their pasture and .. in a vehicle.. I hit one. It came through the windshield and smothered me. Most of my bills are for PTSD.. which i’ve been told is hard to sell to a jury.

I was involved in a car accident in May ‘07. I didn’t have insurance and I still do not (I live in Wisconsin and it is not required by law to have auto insurance). I gave the woman all of my information and I received a phone call from her insurance company that week as she went to the hospital. I hit her from a complete stop almost immediately as I put my foot on the gas (in my opinion, nothing that would need hospitalization). She had some damage to her bumper. After hearing from her insurance company, they told me they would call with further information. I have heard nothing from them until today (October 22), via a letter in which they are asking for collections for damages. It’s 5 months later! Can someone actually do this and what can I do?? I’m 23, I don’t have a lot of money and am pretty broke right now. I emailed a few attorneys asking them the same question, but I wanted to get some answers from anyone who has been through the same situation.

ok, so it was a car accident and my attorney is working on my insurance settlement. It was through uninsured motorist coverage of mine so my limit was 30,000 per person. My medical bills when i added them up from the papers from the hospital(s) and doctors and surgeons…came up to about ,800.I had an 80/20 health insurance policy but i also had an arisa policy? i guess where ihave to reimburse my health insurance for their costs because it was due to an accident. whatever!! i dont get it but anyways… my lawyer told me today that the people that were taking care of getting the money back from my settlement for my health insurance are only asking for ,150.17 but they were billed ,000…(?) and then they told me that they are trying to get the fee waived… and then my costs for my 20% of my bills should be covered by my deductible… (?) does thsi make any sense to anybody? i though for sure i would walk away from this accident with absoltely no money at all….. cont…..
buti was told today by my attorney that after my bills are paid and he has collected is fee i would walk away with about 1/3 of my settlement….. how in the freak is that possible? i mean im not complaining by any means whatso ever..but i mean.. really how?

A week ago Sunday I was involved in a car accident in Myrtle Beach. I rear ended a girl in front of me due to her slamming on brakes because two cars in front of her slammed on brakes. (In my car, it was just me and my boyfriend. In the car I ran into, she had three passengers.) After the accident, everyone established that they were absolutely fine. They even told the cop that. Yesterday, my insurance company contacted me to let me know that she turned the incident into her insurance company and two or three of them in her car got attorneys for injuries. So.. what I would like to know is what is going to happen? I believe that means they are going to try and sue my insurance/myself. Has anyone ever been in this situation before? I’m scared and feel very heartbroken. Her car barely had any damage and mine took most of the damage after I had just gotten it painted. Should I get a lawyer? Because none of them were really hurt to have injuries. After the accident, the people in the girl’s car I hit were all standing outside of her car and laughing, having conversation with my boyfriend, so I’m 100% that they were all fine and just want to try and get money by getting attorneys. I got into a car accident backing up outside my house. The cop gave me a ticket for improper backing and the person that I hit already filed for my insurance to pay. I requested a trial because the cop told me that he would dismiss the case and therefore the ticket if asked for a trial.

My question is how does the trial work and how is it dismissed?
Do I need a lawyer or anything like that?
I figure that the person that I hit wouldn’t come since she already got the money to get her car fixed and she didn’t get a ticket so there wouldn’t be any reason for her to come…

To make a long (LONG) story very short: We entered into a rent to own program through a real estate attorney. We put down a considerable down payment (10k) to keep our monthly rental payments low, were promised in the contract that that money would go toward the down payment when we purchased the house. We were also given ,000 off the price of the house for repairs we made before we moved in.
Through the course of living here, we found out the attorney did not own the house, there was an actual owner.. and they were refusing to sell (even though they entered into a contract). They took their situation to a lawyer and got out of their end.. leaving us up in the air. The contract we signed had a time stipulation and that ran out.. meaning we were out our down payment, they refused to return it. Right before the contract ran out, the house went to foreclosure. It is now owned by the bank and there’s a strong possibility we’ll be forced out.
From what I understand, since the lawyer/company never owned the house, they never had the right to claim they could sell it to us. We even secured financing for the house and the actual seller refused to sell through him.

We went to a very good real estate/contract attorney and told him the situation, showed him the contracts, and asked what we could do.
After a few days of research he said there is a "reasonable chance" we can win, but his fees in total will cost ,500-,500. He wants to take this guy to the cleaners. Wants to sue for not only our down payment, but damages as well. He knows our financial situation, and even stated that considering that, he understands that choosing him may not be a good option for us at the moment.

Does ,500-,500 sound too expensive, or too cheap? I’ve considered shopping for a lesser priced attorney, but the situation is so complicated i’m concerned that finding someone cheaper would lessen our chances of winning. I would dive in if I knew we had a 100% chance of winning, but you never know. I’ve also looked for a contingency lawyer but all the ones in our area seem to only take on personal injury cases.
Honestly, what would you do? What does "reasonable chance of winning" really mean in lamens terms? I understand he can’t give us a "I know you’ll win!" answer because that would be irresponsible.. but I feel like I need a little more assurance before diving in and possibly losing ,500 on top of what we’ve already lost.
I am confident we will win the case, I just don’t want to end up paying 30k in lawyer fees, after being nickled and dimes, and the chance that IF we win, the defendant will just appeal again and again, for a 10k(ish) lawsuit. Would that even happen?
Edited to add: Yes I realize we were stupid by entering into this contract in the first place. We were desperate.. and got screwed because of it. That’s not what I want to hear. I know we were stupid. I just want to know if we can get our money back, and how much it will cost us to do so.
